The aspect ratio of televisions has generally changed from 4:3 to 16:9. TVs have an aspect ratio of 16:9, making them more rectangular in shape and less like a square.
Why the change? It can be more difficult to find room for a widescreen TV in your living room.
Reasons for choosing a widescreen display screen
Films shown in the cinema have an aspect ratio of 16:9, meaning that these films can be easily viewed on a widescreen. Most of the films shown in the standard TV format are cropped which means films shown in standard TV format have huge parts of their original picture removed. This will not be the case when you watch a film on widescreen TV. You will be able to see the whole film without any of the parts being removed.
Computers have usually followed the aspect ratio of 4:3. These days the computer manufacturers are also opting for widescreen TV format, Media Centre PCs and hybrid TV/monitors fuse multimedia and PC functionality are some examples. In addition, there are various traditional applications which also benefit from the widescreen display, for example, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, Steinberg Cubase or Adobe Premiere are best worked on widescreen displays.
Other reasons
- The widescreen format will surely be the preferred choice for most programs in the coming years.
- Creating TV programs in the same format as films will make it easier to transfer from one medium to another.
- Not only feature films will benefit from the extra wide space but also sports are well suited for the widescreen format
- Spilt-screen images have more options in widescreen displays.
