When you start to think about building your own home theater one of the decisions you will have to make is where to put it. A spare bedroom or other spare room in your house could work, but you need to try and allow for as many of the following factors as possible to get it just right.
Lighting
Low ambient lighting is best for the theater experience. Try to find a room that has the least amount of outside light shining in as possible. You could also utilize drapes that eliminate all outside lighting.
Size of Room
A fully enclosed room that is sufficient for all of the furniture you are going to bring into it is the best size. Also a rectangle room with the centerpiece of your systems along the short wall is best for sound.
Surround Sound
You need enough room to place the seating in a central location. If you put the seats against a wall you won't get that surround sound effect that you get at a real movie theater.
Video Display
You need to be able to sit close enough to the screen to maximize the theater experience but not so close that you see a grainy picture. Consider what angle you want to view from also.
Walls
Paint the walls a dark cover or cover them with sound kind of materials that reflect sound where you want to and absorb sound everywhere else.
Floors
You will need a good dark carpet to absorb the sound instead of causing an echo from below that a tile or wood floor may do.
Stray noises
Limit, or eliminate completely if possible, all the outside or inside noises in the room. Move any noise inside the room out and any interference from outside could be eliminated by putting absorptive wall coverings against the wall.
If you can get these factors right in the room you choose for your home theater you should be able to enjoy your new home theater just like you would at the movies.
