Law enforcement is a great field to get into, but there are some aspects of law enforcement that many people never think of, and in fact do not know exist. One such job is that of a postal inspector. But what is a postal inspector? What do they do?
It's actually pretty simple; the postal inspectors around ensure both the integrity of the United States Postal System and protect the postal workers. As you may know, the post office is committed to ensuring that the mail gets to its destination on time, and in order to make that happen, postal inspectors and other law enforcement officers work behind the scenes to make sure the entire operation works smoothly.
Postal inspectors will carry firearms, and they do have the authority to make arrests. Because of this there are a number of requirements that you will need to meet if you are to be successful in obtaining a job in this field. That being said, let's take a look at a few of those requirements.
Basic Requirements
1. You must have no felony record, and no misdemeanor violence charges.
2. You should have a four year college degree, particularly in the field of law enforcement. There are a number of colleges around the country that offer courses of this nature.
3. If you happen to be a law enforcement agent already, you may be eligible for an expedited recruitment process.
4. Be ready to travel. Postal inspectors can be stationed and deployed anywhere around the country. Be ready to spend extended periods of time away from home, and most importantly, don't get attached to any one location.
5. Be able to get along with others. Postal workers can become very irate at times, but you need to be friendly and you need to be able to get along with them. Sometimes postal workers can be a valuable source of information, and of course you should respect the fact that they work an extremely stressful job.
Be ready to undertake uncomfortable jobs, such as issuing warrants, arresting offenders, and even testifying in court. Make no mistake about it; while this is one of the best jobs in law enforcement, it is still a job in law enforcement. With that being the case, you need to make sure you fully contemplate your decision before you commit to it.
