A lot of clinical studies have shown that sleep directly affects a person's mood or disposition. People, especially teenagers who get adequate levels of sleep, are less prone to depression. The time a person gets to bed is also crucial in determining the quality of sleep one gets, so it is not just a matter of getting sufficient hours of sleep. It had been observed that those who go to bed past midnight have a 20 percent higher chance of getting depressed and even entertained thoughts of committing suicide.
Incidents of depression are more prominent among females nearing their twenties, especially on those who had undergone issues regarding self esteem. Studies also showed that the number of hours devoted to sleep had a direct correlation with the level of depression one experiences. In this case, people who slept 5 hours or less had a 70 percent risk of succumbing to depressive states.
Teenage insomnia may start out as a simple lack of sleep as a consequence of a night-out. Later on, this develops into other issues as teenagers begin to get used to the lack of sleep or getting to bed way past midnight. It will seem to appear that the need for sleep has reduced since most teenagers seem to cope with it, but the body experiences the fatigue from within. This is manifested in cases such as unexplained mental blocks during an exam or an abrupt disorientation during a school competition or performance.
Breaking free from this pattern of sleeplessness or the lack of it will be difficult for your teenager and will need some adult intervention. To pass off such as a temporary thing may lead to more pressure, depression and even less sleep in the long run. So it is important for every parent to step into the situation early on.
While your teenager may sulk over an early bedtime, know that you are doing things for the better interest of your child. If needed, waive their rights to have night-outs during weekends and explain to your child how lack of sleep has led to her moodiness and loss of concentration. Point out the importance of getting enough sleep so their judgement, analytical capabilities and impulse controls are kept within the acceptable levels.
